Product design is the entire process of conceptualizing and converting an idea into a final product that can be used to solve a problem. The process of designing a new product involves identifying a problem, visualizing and describing a solution to that problem, and then turning that concept into a usable mechanism.
Designing a new product should start with identifying a problem and then determining what the solution could look like and how it would work. Product design does not focus solely on the aesthetics of a product. Instead, product design should prioritize the mechanics of how the product will work and the ways in which it will solve the problem for which it was created.
Design involves trial and error. A designer will create multiple versions of a product in order to find the best solution for the identified problem. A product design is complete once the problem no longer exists.
Consumers who will be using the product must be taken into consideration when designing a product. If a product is designed to solve a problem, but the people who face that problem are unable to use the product, then the product has not, in fact, solved its designated problem.
Sightbox Product design must go through a series of phases to reach finalization, including product vision (understanding why the product needs to be created); product research (gathering the information needed in order to determine a solution to the problem); brainstorming (drafting concepts that will address the stated vision); designing (turning ideas and drafts into a physical product and creating the solution to the problem); validation (determining whether or not the product solves its designated problem and testing its usability); launch (creating the final product and marketing it to consumers); and post-launch (accepting feedback from consumers and developing the most suitable version of the product).
